Also, some utility companies use it to make electricity. You are right that using a trash burners at home would smoke us back to a time when homes were heated with coal. I know of a couple of co-generation plants that were built for coal or trash fuel but the government will not let them burn trash. There is a cement manufacturer that uses a mixture of ground up trash and used oil as a fuel in place of burning gas or coal.
